HAYS, Kan. – The York University men's wrestling team had a solid showing at the Bob Smith Open Sunday.
In the 125-lb. class,
Ernest Grant picked up six points for the Panthers. He opened the event with a pin in 3:26 over his opponent from Nebraska-Kearney. In the consolation bracket, Grant notched a 20-4 technical fall win. He then posted back-to-back victories by decisions (11-5 and 11-4) before dropping a fifth-round match.
Barrett Stickelman picked up a point in the same division after posting a 4-2 victory over his foe.
At the 133-lb. class,
Hector Holguin garnered 3.5 points. He opened with an 11-9 decision over his opponent from Fort Hays State. In the consolation bracket, he earned a win via fall in 34 seconds.
Drew Lugafet earned 2.5 points in the same division. He accounted for a victory in the consolation bracket via fall in 7:00.
The 149-lb. division was represented by
Conner Thurston, who tallied 3.0 points. His victory came via forfeit.
Kade Wersland totaled 2.5 points at the 157-lb. class. He won via a 6-5 decision. In the consolation bracket, Wersland tallied a 9-6 victory over an opponent from Fort Hays Tech Northwest.
The 184-lb. division saw
Cameron Campos register 2.5 points. He won a match via pin fall in 2:37 against an opponent from Adams State.
In the same division,
Dayton Fraser posted 2.0 points. He picked up an 11-2 major decision win over an opponent from Ouachita Baptist.
Tanner Hawkins recorded 11.5 points with his sixth-place effort. In the consolation bracket, he started things off with back-to-back wins via fall. Hawkins' first win came in 5:00 before notching a second victory in 2:52. After earning a major decision win (18-8), he advanced to the consolation semifinals with a 12-5 win before falling in the fifth-place match.
Marce Vasquez accounted for 6.5 points and
Malaki Morales-Perez earned 3.0 points in the 285-lb. class. Vasquz earned a hard-fought 2-1 decision in his opening round match against his foe from CSU Pueblo. He then garnered a 19-4 technical fall victory. In the consolation bracket, Vasquez posted a win via fall in 2:03 before recording a 1-0 win over an opponent from Labette C.C.
Morales-Perez picked up a win via fall – in 6:32 – against an opponent from Western Colorado.
