Panthers beat Eagles in wrestling dual

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The York University men's wrestling team posted a 39-9 victory over Avila Friday evening.

The Panthers opened the dual meet with Ernest Grant picking up a forfeit win for a 6-0 lead. Leading 6-3, Elijah Kaawa snagged a 6-1 victory in the 141-lb. class for three points.

Brayden Smith continued the solid meet for York with a pin fall in just 1:23 in the 149-lb. division. His win propelled the Panthers to a 15-3 lead.

With a narrow 1-0 decision, Johnathan Vincent earned the win in the 157-lb. class. Kade Wersland ensured York his match in the 165-lb. division would not be close, earning a 19-4 technical fall win for a 23-3 advantage.

Dayton Fraser earned three points for his 4-3 victory in the 174-lb. class. The Panthers closed out the dual meet with a pair of victories via pins. Tanner Hawkins grappled well and at the 6:23 mark, he picked up the win via fall in the 197-lb. division.

Marce Vasquez continued his solid season with a fall in a mere 82 seconds for the final six points of the evening for York.  

Overall, the Panthers won three matches via falls and another via technical fall. For the evening, York secured wins in eight matches.

The Panthers return to action Wednesday, Jan. 22 when they compete at Midland University at 6 p.m.
