WILMORE, Ky. –
Zion Atwood finished sixth in the decathlon with 4,173 points at the NCCAA National Championship.
Atwood, a junior from Mesa, Ariz., competed over two days for his event, which wrapped up Thursday afternoon.
He opened the NCCAA National Championship with a seventh-place finish in the 100m with a time of 12.22. He earned 608 points for his time.
In the long jump, Atwood secured an eighth-place finish with a mark of 5.34m, which was good enough for 449 points.
He secured an eighth-place finish in the shot put at 8.45m. That score allowed him to pick up 393 points.
In the high jump, Atwood notched an eighth-place finish. He secured 389 points after clearing 1.50m.
Atwood finished fifth in the 400m, which marked the last event on Wednesday – the first day of the decathlon. He posted a time of 53.92 for 643 points. Heading into the second day of competition, Atwood stood in fourth place (2,482 points).
Thursday morning Atwood opened the competition with a sixth-place finish in the 110m hurdles. He clocked a time of 19.32, earning 405 points.
Atwood snagged sixth place in the discus after registering a mark of 26.37m, which was good enough for 394 points.
In the javelin, Atwood posted a mark of 30.08m, which allowed him to snag 300 points. He finished ninth in the event.
The final event was the 1,500m. Atwood garnered a first-place finish with an outstanding time of 4:54.49, besting second place by eight seconds. He acquired 592 points with the time.
Atwood did not record a height in the pole vault.
For the remainder of the meet Atwood secured a 12
th-place finish in the 400m hurdles. He clocked a time of 1:00.41.
In the 100m, rookie
Conner Neuhalfen snagged 14
th place with a time of 10.96. He secured a 15
th-place effort in the 200m after clocking a time of 22.32.
Trenton Orlando crossed the finish line in 51.21 in the 400m. The time was good enough for 13
th place.
In the final event of the championship – the 4x400m relay – the quartet of
Jaden Beske,
Braden McNair, Neuhalfen and Orlando combined to post a time of 3:32.96. The time allowed the four to take ninth place.
