Aaron Conyers (SR/Cameron Park, CA) and the Panthers started off strong but were unable to hold on as the Eagles extended their winning streak to 24 games with a 7-3 decision Friday afternoon. Oklahoma Wesleyan swept the regular season series in York, Nebraska earlier this season but the Panthers were hoping to change things in the postseason. After allowing an unearned run in the first inning the Panthers took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. York would hold that lead until the Eagles tied the game in the sixth and then took the lead for good scoring twice in the seventh.
Joe Garcia (SR/Woodland, CA) got things rolling again scoring Rudy Perez (JR/Stockton, CA) from third. Anthony Enriquez (JR/Sacramento, CA) also got an infield single scoring Caleb Connolly (SR/Winters, CA). The Panthers weren't able to get much else going until the seventh inning. Jordan Pella (JR/Adams, NE) and Enriquez both singled and then two outs later Tyler Helms (SR/Livermore, CA) singled to score Enriquez. A walk to Perez loaded the bases and the Eagles brought in a relief pitcher. Caleb Connolly was unable to hit the ball out of the infield as his grounder got the force at second base to end the inning.
Anthony Enriquez led the offense going 3-4 with an RBI and Joe Garcia was 2-4, also with an RBI. Aaron Conyers pitched 7 2/3 innings being credited with the loss. He gave up four earned runs, as four Panther mistakes led to three more runs for the Eagles.
Coach Walth said, "I was pleased how we came out offensively and really got some hits against their ace Ibarra. Unfortunately we made some mistakes defensively, and the good team that they are, made us pay. We didn't move base runners enough in the clutch situations and they did."
The Panthers move to the loser's bracket and will face Bellevue University once again Saturday. York beat Bellevue in game one of the tournament 4-2.
