Softball comes up short against Oklahoma Wesleyan

The Lady Panthers made a game of it after falling behind early, losing 10-9 on a single in the bottom of the seventh inning to Oklahoma Wesleyan in their conference opener.

Morgan Moore (SO/Loomis, Calif.) gave up a solo home run in the first and then a two-run shot in the second as the Panthers quickly found themselves in a deep hole. It wasn't until the third inning before York was able to get on the board after Brianna Perez (JR/Madera, Calif.) hit a single to right field to score Lilliana Herrera (FR/Cerritos, Calif.) and Renee Rayls (SR/Menifee, Calif.) to cut the Eagles lead in half 4-2. Unfortunately the bats of the Eagles were active once again as they scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning to go up 9-2.

A scoreless fourth inning put the Panthers in a desperate need of runs over the final three innings to have a chance. Mackenzie Bush (SR/Fremont, Calif.) hit a three run home run that was shortly followed by a two run shot by Corrine Pearl (SR/Ridgecrest. Calif.). Those five runs put the Panthers right back into the thick of it as they scored two more runs in the sixth inning to tie the ball game. A double by Brittany Rayls (SO/Menifee, Calif.) scored Perez and Bush.

Going into the seventh inning the Panthers really needed to get a run to put the pressure on the Eagles. Unfortunately runners were left stranded on first and second. A lead-off single for the Eagles put the winning run on base. A fielder's choice throw to second appeared to get the first out of the inning but the field umpire saw things differently as both runners were on safely. An infield single loaded the bases. Morgan Derengowski (SO/Bennington, Neb.) picked up the next batted ball and threw home for the force to keep the Panthers alive. However, the next pitch was hit to left field and the winning run from third scored for the Eagles.

York had every batter get a base hit on the afternoon and were led by Herrera, Molly Reyes (SO/Corona, Calif.), and Bush with three hits a piece. Janelle Krening (FR/Loveland, Colo.) pitched a solid game in relief but picked up the loss allowing the game ending run.

The Panthers are back in action tomorrow as they face Central Baptist and Central Christian in Conway, Ark.
