Softball splits with Waldorf to cap home season

The Ladyp Panthers beat Waldorf in game one 4-3 before falling in game two 10-9. It was a day of emtions as both games came down to the final at bats. The Panthers scored the winning run in game one in the bottom of the seventh off of an error. And it was Waldorf that scored two runs in the top of the sixth to pick up game two.

In game one the Panthers scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Dani Marks (SR/Pierce, Neb.) led things off with a single in her senior day finale and Molly Reyes (SO/Corona, Calif.) bunted her over to second. Lilianna Herrera (FR/Cerritos, Calif.) then scored Marks on a single past the shortstop. Chelsea Holland (FR/Napa, Calif.) followed that with the homerun of homeruns as she hit the ball over both fences for a two-run shot.
The Panthers didn't hold the lead for long as the Warriors picked up four of their own in the top of the fourth to take the lead. York tied the ball game in the bottom of the fifth as Herrara once again had an RBI single that scored Renee Rayls (SR/Menifee, Calif.) who was standing on second after her double to left-center field.
In the bottom of the seventh with the game tied at 4 Molly Reyes led off the inning with a double. Renee Rayls advanced Reyes to third on a sac bunt before Herrara popped out for the second out. Holland and Corrine Pearl (SR/Ridgecrest. Calif.) both walked to load the bases. Brittany Rayls (SO/Menifee, Calif.) put the ball in play to third and reached safely on a wild throw that scored Reyes from third to win the ball game for the Panthers. Herrera and R. Rayls both led the Panthers with two hits apiece as Holland drove in two RBIs. Janelle Krening (FR/Loveland, Colo.) picked up the win for the Panthers as she relieved Morgan Moore (SO/Loomis, Calif.) in the fourth inning.

In game two it was a slugfest as both teams used big innings to push the other. With the Panthers leading 3-2 the Warriors used a 5-run fifth to take a commanding lead. However coach Roni Miller's team wasn't about to fold and scored six runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame to regain the lead. York had seven hits in the inning highlighted by Dani Marks' two RBI double. York allowed two runs in the top of the sixth to fall behind 10-9. The Panthers fought back in the bottom of the seventh but stranded runners at first and second as R. Rayls struck out looking to end the ball game.

Mackenzie Bush (SR/Fremont, Calif.) and Marks led the Panthers with three hits a piece. Holland, B. Rayls and Courtney Lovelace (SO/Lake Elsinore, Calif.) each had two hits in the game. Vanessa Rodriguez (SO/Santa Clarita Valley, Calif.) started the game and Morgan Moore picked up the loss coming in to relieve Rodriguez in the fifth.

The Panthers hold a 7-26 record, 5-9 in conference play. York travels to Bellevue, Neb. tomorrow to face Bellevue University in a doubleheader that was rained out on Saturday. York finishes the regular season on the road this weekend at Waldorf and College of St. Mary.
