Starting pitcher John Mead (SR/Martinez, CA) went the distance in Tuesday's nonconference matchup with Concordia University. Mead allowed one run on four hits as he struck out seven batters in the contest. He struck out the first four batters he faced. The offense gave him plenty of cushion as well as they scored 13 runs to shorten the scheduled nine-inning game down to seven.
York College got on the board quickly as the Panthers scored two in the first two innings before doubling that total in the fourth inning. The Panthers added another in the sixth and four more in the seventh to finish out the scoring.
Nick Stoll (SR/Fresno, CA ) started the scoring off as he hit a solo home run in the top of the first. Jose Bueno (SR/Oak Hills, CA) then scored on a double by Michael Johnson (SR/Union City, CA). In the second inning back-to-back singles by Josh Burgener (SR/Gering, NE) and Timmion Hughes (JR/Vallejo, CA) chased starting pitcher Schipper out of the game. Stoll followed up with another single and scored both runners to put the Panthers up 4-0.
In the fourth innings it was two Bulldog errors that really helped the Panthers put the game away. After Burgener was hit by a pitch and Hughes reached on a bunt hit the Panthers were in business. Lamar Smith (JR/Rodeo, CA) and Hughes each stole a base to put runners at second and third. Stoll hit an RBI ground out before Billy Johnson (JR/Oakland, CA) reached on an error. Another error scores Johnson before Bueno scores on Josh Roman's (JR/Newark, CA) grounder.
In the seventh inning the Panthers were only able to get one hit, but managed to score four runs as the pitching for Concordia struggled to find the strike zone. Nick Carney (JR/Pleasanton, CA) had the lone hit while to Panthers were hit by pitch and two others walked in the inning. Mead gave up his lone run in the bottom of the seventh but the damage was already done as the Panthers held a 13-1 advantage.
York improved to 27-9 on the season and will host (11) Tabor College in a four-game series this Saturday and Sunday. Both days' double headers are set to begin at 1:00 pm.
