Baseball: Panthers strand runners in loss to Sterling

Sterling, Kan. - York College doubled up Sterling in hits Friday afternoon but still came up short in a 5-4 road loss to open up the conference series. The Panthers accumulated 14 hits, but stranded 11 runners in the loss. All five Warriors' runs were off of home runs.

Nick Carney (SR/Pleasanton, Calif) hit a two-run home run (ninth on the season) to tie the game up in the third inning. York pushed two more across in the sixth as Lamar Smith (SR/Rodeo, Calif) singled in Kevin Olmstead (JR/Great Bend, Ore) and Billy Johnson (SR/Oakland, Calif) hit a double to score Timmion Hughes (SR/Vallejo, Calif).

With the Panthers leading 4-3 in the seventh inning the Warriors hit back-to-back solo home runs to take the lead. York got a runner on base each of the final two innings but were unable to move them across to tie the ball game.

Billy Damon (JR/Reno, Nev) picked up the loss as he went seven strong innings. Billy Johnson went 4-for-5 from the plate.
