Baseball: Damon leads way in opening day split against #7 Tabor

Hillsboro, Kan. - York College dominated all but one inning against No. 7 Tabor College as they split the doubleheader on Saturday 19-2 and 8-9. The Panthers hit five home runs in game one and three more in game two led by Billy Damon (JR/Reno, Nev), who had two in each game. York's only struggle came in the final inning of game two as they allowed five runs in the bottom of the seventh that allowed Tabor to escape with the win.

Game 1
York College scored seven runs in the third inning and then nine in the sixth to run away with the 19-2 win. Johnny Hemenes (JR/Brentwood, Calif) pitched a complete game, going seven innings and only allowing two runs. Damon went 4-for-5 with seven RBIs, including a grand slam in the third. Timmion Hughes (SR/Vallejo, Calif) started the scoring off with a solo shot over the center field fence. Lamar Smith (SR/Rodeo, Calif) singled, Connor Towle (SO/Keller, Texas) was hit by pitch, and then Nick Carney (SR/Pleasanton, Calif) reached on a walk to load the bases. Isaiah Bond (JR/Union City, Calif) was also hit by pitch and scored Smith. Then Josh Roman hit an infield single to score Towle before Damon unleashed his 0-2 pitch over the center field fence.

In the fifth inning York scored three more as Damon led things off with a solo shot. A walk to DB Vidal (SO/Livermore, Calif) and an infield single to Hughes put runners on first and second with one out. Each runner added a stolen base before Billy Johnson (SR/Oakland, Calif) doubled to finish off the scoring.

In the sixth the Panthers garnered seven hits scoring nine runs. Lamar Smith had his own grand slam, before Carney hit a two-run shot over the left field fence. Josh Roman (SR/Newark, Calif) doubled in Bond to tack on the final run for the Panthers.

The Panthers out hit the Bluejays 16-7 in the game.

Game 2
York trailed from the beginning as they allowed Tabor to score two in the first inning. The bats came alive once again in the fifth inning as Damon led it off with his third home run of the day. A wild pitch scored Hughes from third to tie the game at two through five. In the sixth Damon hit a three-run home run over the left field fence to put the Panthers up 5-2. The Bluejays got two back in the bottom half of the inning to cut their deficit to one heading into the sixth.

Connor Towle doubled down the right field line scoring Billy Johnson from second before Carney hit a two-run home run over the right field fence to give the Panthers some breathing room at 8-4.

After starting pitched Adam Kimmel (JR/San Ramon, Calif) had thrown 120 pitches he was relieved for the seventh for closer Justin Hukill (SR/Fallbrook, Calif). The Bluejays brought everything they could in the bottom of the seventh as they led the inning off with a double and then a home run to cut with two at 8-6. Another single and a walk brought in reliever Jarrell Cunningham (SR/Susanville, Calif) to slow things down. He was able to get two outs but couldn't get any more as they Bluejays scored three more runs on a passed ball and two singles.

Kimmel went six strong innings allowing just four runs and two walks in the no decision outing. Cunningham was credited with the loss.
