Baseball: Strong pitching gives Panthers day one sweep

Lindsborg, Kan. - Billy Damon (JR/Reno, Nev) and Brandon Facha (JR/Fremont, Calif) both pitched complete games on Sunday afternoon allowing the Panthers to pick up the 6-2 and 8-0 wins over conference opponent Bethany College.

Game 1
Damon struck out eight batters in nine innings and allowed just two runs. Seven batters had two hits for the Panthers as well as they cruised to the 6-2 win. Lamar Smith (SR/Rodeo, Calif) got things rolling early as he reached in the first on an infield single before stealing second. A one out singled by Nick Carney (SR/Pleasanton, Calif) gave the Panthers the 1-0 lead and they never looked back.

In the fourth inning the Panthers scored four runs, thanks in large part to DB Vidal (SO/Livermore, Calif) hit a two RBI double before scoring on the errant throw. Timmion Hughes (SR/Vallejo, Calif) followed with a bunt single before he stole his program-tying 40th base of the season. A single by Billy Johnson (SR/Oakland, Calif) scored Hughes and the Panthers were on top 5-0.

Kevin Olmstead (JR/Great Bend, Ore) hit in Johnson in the sixth for the 6-0 lead and finish off the scoring for York.

The Panthers were credited with a base hit in every inning except the third, as the Swedes pitcher Yoberth Marchan struck out the side.

Game 2
York racked up eight runs in the first two innings giving Facha enough wiggle room to pitch relaxed. He did just that over the seven innings, striking out four and allowing seven hits and no runs.

Nick Carney led the Panthers with two hits and two RBIs on the game. DB Vidal also snagged two hits of his own.

The Panthers chased starter Even Brooks before he could get out of the second inning after scoring eight runs, six of them earned. Relieve James Yandell only allowed three hits the rest of the way for the Swedes as he struck out six Panther batters.

York finishes their three-game series with the Swedes Monday afternoon at 3 p.m. The Panthers hold a 26-22 record overall as they head into their final week of regular season play.
