Great Bend, KAN. - Matt Lindsley (SR/Bakersfield, Calif.) pitched 10 solid innings striking out 13 batters as the Panthers outlasted the Bulldogs 6-3 in 11 innings of play. Vincent Valentine (SR/Folsom, Calif.) was the hero on offense as he hit two home runs and batted in four in the game.
York looked to score first in the top of the second inning when Ethan Lanz (SO/Littleton, Colo.) hit a solo shot over the left field fence. However, an appeal took place at first and his home run was wiped as the umpire said his foot missed the bag. The call took a toll on the offense until Valentine tied the game up in the eighth inning with his solo shot.
The Panthers offense got rolling in the 11th as they scored five runs with two outs on the scoreboard. Matt Nunes (JR/Fowler, Calif.) reached on a walk and then Alec Venegas (SR/Noble, Okla.) pinch ran for him. He advance to second on a wild pitch before Ethan Lanz was intentionally walked. Luke Jackson (SR/Escondido, Calif.) doubled to deep right-center to put the Panthers up 3-1. Travis Tuner then reached on a walk and Valentine was due up. He smashed the first pitch he saw over the left field fence to put York up 6-1.
With a five run cushion Lindsley came back out in the 11th to try to finish off the game. However, an error put two runners on base and Lindsley loaded the bases with a hit batsmen. Clay Lube (SR/Lincoln. Neb.) came in to relieve Lindsley and was able to get out of the bases loaded jam with allowing just two runs to cross home plate.
With the win the Panthers face Tabor College on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
