Panthers play hard but fall at KCAC leading Ottawa

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

Ottawa, KAN. - The Panthers had a tough series on the road as Ottawa, ranked #14 in latest NAIA Poll, was ready to roll. The Panthers battled hard in the first two games, but fell 10-5 and 2-1. In the final matchup on Sunday the Braves cruised to a 12-1 win.

Game one
York jumped ahead 3-2 in the top of the second inning before the Braves scored in the bottom half of the inning and then controlled the final six innings. Tyler Loureiro started off the scoring for York with an RBI double. Jose Martinez followed suit with an RBI single to center and then Jaysson Valle hit a sacrifice fly to left for the 3-2 lead.

Jesus Licon hit a solo home run in the sixth before he knocked in Nicholas DeMonte with an RBI double in the seventh. The Panthers threw five pitchers in the game and Zane Barnett was credited with the loss.

Game two
Treyton Scully pitched a phenomenal game holding the Braves to just five hits in the contest. With a seven-inning game scheduled Scully pushed the home team to extra innings before a bases-loaded walk ended the game. Scully allowed just two runs over the course of the game. The tough part was the Panthers were unable to score enough runs to help him out as they stranded six runners on the bases.

York took the lead in the fourth inning when a passed ball moved all three runners up a base. The Panthers had runners at second and third with just one out, but back-to-back strikeouts didn't allow any more runners to score. As solid of pitching as Scully had the Braves were just as good as they struck out 10 batters and allowed just the one unearned run.

Luke Juarez, Tony Riley, and Licon were the bright spots for the Panthers offensively as they were responsible for six of the seven hits the Panthers had.

Game three
York looked to capitalize in the third and final game as they took a 1-0 lead into the third inning. However, three home runs allowed by starter Daniel Tomkiewicz put the Braves up for good 3-1. The Panthers mustered only three hits in the game, one to each Licon, Charlie Konstantino, and Loureiro. Juarez earned two walks at the plate.

The Panthers struggled the rest of the way as they struck out 13 times. The game ended on a walk-off grand slam for the Braves in the seventh inning.

York has a slew of home games scheduled this week. They start things off on Thursday hosting Nebraska Wesleyan in a non-conference game before hosting a three-game series with Southwestern College over the weekend.

The schedule for the Southwestern series has moved to a single game on Saturday at 3:00 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Sunday. The first game on Sunday is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
