Panthers earn split with top-seeded Eagles

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

YORK - After losing game one in six innings to the power-hitting Eagles of Oklahoma Wesleyan 12-4, the Panthers fought hard and beat the Eagles 7-6 in nine innings on Saturday. The Eagles were ranked atop the KCAC in several different categories, but the Panthers were able to keep them in check during game two.

Game One
Oklahoma Wesleyan pounded out 16 hits and the Panthers committed three errors in the six-inning game. Bailey Hardey threw her best but the Eagles kept finding a way to get on base. She pitched three innings and gave up 10 runs to the power-hitting Eagles. Oklahoma Wesleyan came into the game hitting over .360 as a team and over .500 slugging pct.

York picked up five hits in the game. Breanna Underwood and Haylea Thomas each tallied two hits while Katy Fazendin had the only other hit for the Panthers. Thomas was credited with all three RBIs on the game. Underwood picked up two more stolen bases in the contest as well.

Game Two
York led 2-1 after the first and held strong until the sixth inning when the Eagles scored three runs thanks to a two-run home run and a bases-loaded single. As York faced the pressure of being swept by the top team in the conference the Panthers scored two runs in the seventh to force extra innings. Kennedie Anderson hit an RBI single that scored Kieyerah Twombly and then a throwing error scored Emma Morphew from second.

With the international tie-breaker in effect, which places a runner on second base to start the inning, both teams held strong in the eighth to force another inning. The Eagles scored two runs in the ninth to put all of the pressure back on York. Haylea Thomas scored Erika McClung with a leadoff single. Anderson reached on a fielder's choice to bring up Sofia Perez with two outs and the Panthers trailing by one run. Perez left no doubt as she smashed a walk-off two-run home run over the right-field fence to send the Panthers to victory over the visiting Eagles.

Kate Reyes picked up the complete-game win going nine innings and striking out eight batters. Thomas led the Panthers from the plate as she went 4-for-5 and an RBI. Reyes helped herself as well going 2-for-5 and knocking in two Panthers.

York will host McPherson College on Wednesday afternoon with games slated for 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm.
