WICHITA, Kan. – The York University women's wrestling team opened the season with a 10^th-place finish at the Falcon Open Friday.

In the 103 lb. class, Grace Conner advanced to the second round before dropping her match.

Rocio Chavez Fuentes opened the 110 lb. class with a bye. After dropping her second-round match, she won via fall over her foe from Avila in a mere 58 seconds, helping the Panthers secure 3.0 points.

After receiving an opening-round bye in the 124 lb. division, Jill High lost her second-round competition. However, she won via a fall in 52 seconds over her opponent from Carl Albert. An injury forced her to stop her match in the ensuing match.

Joy Ortiz posted a first-round victory via fall in just 1:29 in the 160-lb. class. After dropping her next bout, she again won via fall, this time in 2:17. Ortiz continued her solid work, winning via injury default and then via fall in the fourth round before dropping her consolation match. However, she secured 10.5 points for her work.

Alissa Castro received a bye and won via fall (1:42) in the 180 lb. bracket. After dropping her quarterfinal competition, she won via fall in 2:23. For her effort, Castro recorded 6.5 points.

In the 207 lb. division, Folashade Akinola recorded a fourth-place finish for 12 points. In the consolation round, she received a bye before winning via tech. fall (10-0) over her foe from Oklahoma State University.Akinola won via fall for the next two rounds – with the first occurring in just 37 seconds and the second one in 1:42. In the consolation semifinals, Akinola downed her foe from Ottawa in 1:08 to reach the third-place match. She lost that battle by a 21-10 score.

Overall, the squad totaled 33.5 points at the meet.

The Panthers return to action Saturday, Nov. 9, when they compete at the Waldorf Open starting at 9 a.m.
