Box Score 2 HANNIBAL, Mo. – The York University baseball team defeated Hannibal-LaGrange 17-6 in the first game of the series but trailed the home squad 8-6 in the nightcap when the game was postponed.
The Panthers are now 5-7 on the season.
In game one,
Secundino Morales blasted a one-out double to center field and scored on a
Cesar Galvan base knock for a 1-0 lead in the first.
The Panthers broke open the game in the second stanza. After
Mateo Sierras lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that plated
Ryan Romero, the visitors went back to work.
Isaac Stark walked and stole second. After
Austin Grant was hit by a pitch, Morales cleared the bases with a thunderous round-tripper for a 5-0 margin.
York tacked on a run in the third when
Daniel Polo belted a solo homer, increasing the margin to 6-0.
Up 6-3 in the top of the fourth, the Panthers pushed the lead to seven. Morales singled home Stark, who led off the frame with a single before swiping second base. An error put Grant on first and Stark on third before Morales drove him in. Galvan's groundout allowed Grant to score for an 8-3 advantage. Polo and
Trevor Peterson unleashed back-to-back home runs for a seven-run cushion.
Leading 10-4, York extended the margin on a bases-loaded walk to
Sam Hodoly in the sixth. Sierras lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, driving in another run.
The Panthers held a 12-6 lead in the top of the seventh but the bats were not done. A Polo single plated
Jose Martinez. Peterson's sacrifice fly drove in Morales and Hodoly tallied another sacrifice fly ball that drove in
Tyren Dorrance.
Cameron Reeve blasted a two-RBI double to make it 17-6 in favor of the visitors.
For the game, York tallied 17 runs on 13 hits without committing an error. Morales led the way with four hits, including a home run and a double, to go along with four RBI and three runs scored. Polo blasted three hits, including two round-trippers, and scored four times. Peterson notched two hits, including a home run, two RBI and scored twice.
Hodoly, Reeve and Sierras all drove in two while Grant, Stark and Romero each scored twice.
On the mound,
Ian Heck got the start and went five innings to get the win. He struck out three in the victory.
Fred Juden and
James Mockry combined for an inning of work as each had one strikeout.
Jackson Van Roekel came in to work the seventh.
The Panthers opened game two with a run in the first inning. Galvan reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a Polo single up the middle. York pushed the score to 2-0 in the second frame. Romero walked, swiped second and third before Hodoly singled him home.
Leading 2-1 in the fourth, Morales ripped a single to center field, driving in Hodoly. After a steal by Morales put two in scoring position, Galvan registered a two-RBI single to right field, plating Grant and Morales. The Trojans scored one in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-2. A five-run fifth inning propelled the Trojans in front by a 7-5 count.
York pulled within one in the sixth stanza. Polo doubled to center field and moments later, he scored on Heck's sacrifice fly to left field. However, that was all the team could plate in the inning.
The home squad added a run in the bottom of the sixth. With the score at 8-6 going into the eighth inning, the contest was postponed until tomorrow.
