MARSHALL, Mo. – The York University women's wrestling team competed at the Missouri Valley Open over the weekend.
Jill High was outstanding at the tournament. After losing her opening match in the 131-lb. class, she bounced back to take down Samantha Banks of Campbellsville via pin fall in 17 seconds. She picked up another victory in the same fashion, this time taking down Bronwyn Brenneman of William Penn in 2:06. High recorded a 6-5 decision over Rachel Dismuke (Saint Mary). High ousted Laisha Ross 6-0 before pinning Sienna Sanborn (Tiffin) in a mere 56 seconds, reaching Saturday's competition. She trailed 10-8 to her foe from Lindsey Wilson before falling via pin at the 5:33 mark.
In the 110-lb. division, Rocio Chavez opened the meet with a technical fall victory over Victoria Pena (10-0). After falling in her second match, Chavez trailed before pinning Alejandra Mezano (Ottawa) in 2:29, earning a spot in Saturday's competition. She fell by a 6-4 count to her opponent from Iowa Central CC Saturday.
In the 160-lb. division,
Piper Kunnap lost her first match before responding with a 14-4 technical fall victory over Hawkey C.C.'s Anna Johnson in the second match of the day. However, she lost her next match to a foe from the University of Alberta.
In the same class, Angie Rose dropped a pair of hard-fought matches. She trailed 2-1 in the second match before falling via pin.
Jocelyn Prado fell by a 12-2 count in her first match in the 103-lb. division before posting a 10-0 technical fall victory over Grace Acosta of Schreiner University in her second bout. However, Prado dropped her next match via technical fall.
The Panthers return to action at the Doane Open on Dec. 5.
