CRETE, Neb. – The York University women's wrestling team put forth a tremendous performance at the Doane Open Friday afternoon.
The Panthers had six student-athletes compete at the prestigious event.
In the amateur division,
Jocelyn Prado claimed the 103-lb. title. She opened with a 10-0 technical fall victory in 2:09 over Vanessa Tellez. Leading 8-0 against Angela Lee, Prado recorded a pin fall victory at the 5:02 mark.
She wasted little time against Bryanna Padilla, cinching the win with a pin fall in just 41 seconds, advancing to the championship match. Against Mya Hairston, Prado trailed 4-2 in the second period. In the last 41 seconds of the frame, she picked up four points, securing the 6-4 win.
Maddie Davis opened her first match at the 145-lb. division with a 16-6 technical fall win in 4:21 over Virginia Myers. She then bested Maddie O'Brien with an 8-2 score in the second match. However, she withdrew due to injury for the remainder fo the competition.
Ryanne Dunn took part in the 138-lb. class. She received a pair of byes to start the tournament. Competing against Lillian Hagemann, Dunn was pinned late in the first period. She lost via technical fall to Isabel Reyes at the 4:27 mark.
In the elite division,
Jill High took part in the 131-lb. class. She promptly recorded an opening-round technical fall victory over Valda Uskluth-Karaja from Iowa Western by a 17-6 count. She continued her dominant run with a fall at the 3:00 mark against Violet De La Cruz of Texas Wesleyan.
In the quarterfinal match, she was neck-and-neck with Izzy Levine before the opposition recorded a pin fall win at the 4:00 mark. High was unable to pick up a win in the next round, dropping a contest via technical fall.
Competing in the 110-lb. division,
Rocio Chavez Fuentes had a pair of byes before falling in her next two matches – the first to a foe from the University of Providence – and the second to a student-athlete from Menlo College.
Piper Kunnap competed in the 160-lb. class. She lost an opening-round match to Margaret Jordan of Baker University 12-2. Kunnap lost a decision to Destiny Ware (Providence) in her second competition of the event.
The Panthers return to action on Sunday, Jan. 4, when they host the University of Saint Mary in a dual starting at 2 p.m.
