Golf: Panthers open spring season at Baker Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The York University men's golf team finished eighth at the Baker Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday.
 
Baker won the tournament at 44-over par. Southwestern CC and MidAmerica Nazarene were second and third, respectively. The Panthers shot 126-over par. After posting a score of 77-over par on Monday, the squad fired a 49-over par for the second round of action.
 
The Panthers were led by Francisco Carvalho Gouveia's 16th-place effort. He opened with a seven-over par before carding an eight-over par for the second round of action. Gouveia shot 15-over par for the 36-hole event. 
 
Tanner Simmerman recorded a 30th-place finish. He wrapped up the event at 26-over par. After shooting 22-over par on Monday, he had a spectacular four-over par for the second round of play and moved up 10 spots. 
 
Christian Flint earned a 40th-place finish while Aaron Bartak and Aiden Espinoza were 41st and 42nd, respectively. Flint posted a 39-over par while Bartak shot 51-over par. Espinoza registered a 54-over par in the eight-team event. 
 
The men return to action March 16-17 at the Doane University Spring Invite.

On the women's side of things the Panthers battled against the host team during the two-day tournament.
 
Baker won the tournament at 90-over par. The Panthers shot 257-over par for the 36-hole event.
 
The Panthers were led by Sydney Fernandez's fourth-place finish at 34-over par. She posted scores of 13-over par and 21-over par for the two rounds.
 
Alba Kindelan moved up a spot in the rankings on Tuesday into sixth place. She finished at 67-over par. After opening with a 37-over par, she shot 30-over par for the second round.
 
Erica Testerman was seventh at 77-over par. She improved two places on Tuesday. Testerman recorded rounds of 47-over par and 30-over par. 
 
Penelope Heaton was eighth at 79-over par. She improved by five strokes on Tuesday. Heaton opened with a 42-over par before firing a 37-over par for the final 18 holes of play. 
 
The women have a couple of weeks off before they return to action Apr. 6-7 at the Lark Invitational, which is hosted by Hesston College.
