Tyrone Grady was a standout on the court during one of the most successful runs York College basketball has ever seen. During his years at York College, he became the all-time leading scorer, earning 1,531 points, 615 assists, and 189 steals.
Grady came to York from Newport, Ark., and was a starter on the basketball team all four years he spent at YC. His junior year he was named to the MCAC All-Conference team and received honorable mention honors on the NAIA Div. II Men's Basketball All-American team.Â
By his senior year, Grady was 12th in the nation in free throw percentage, hitting 86 percent from the line. He also recorded 6.3 assists per game, 13th best in the nation and averaged over 14 points per game.Â
During Grady's senior year, the Panthers were second in the nation in rebounds in margin over their opponents. In 31 games, York had 1,342 rebounds to their opponents 1,038, or a 9.8 percent advantage.Â
Athletic prowess alone is not what made Grady great. A former teammate remembers him this way: "While he was a fierce competitor, he was also the ultimate team player. Tyrone fought through injury throughout most of his career. He didn't want his teammates to feel that he let them down. Tyrone was and is a great representative for both YC and the men's basketball program."
Today Grady is passing on his love of the game as a coach for the Wichita West High women's basketball program.
Because of his outstanding athletic achievements and heart of a champion, on October 23, 2015, Tyrone Grady '02 is inducted into the York College Athletic Hall of Fame.
